Upfront cost and long-term value
Architectural asphalt is usually the lower installed cost. For many suburban homes it is still the practical pick, especially when the deck and ventilation are sound.
Standing seam metal costs more on day one. Over 40 to 50 years it often needs fewer replacements, so the lifetime cost can favour metal if you are staying put. If you may sell in five years, asphalt often wins on cash flow.
How each handles Canadian weather
Asphalt performs well when underlayment, ice and water shield, and attic ventilation are done right. Ice dams and wind uplift are the usual failure points we see on older installs.
Metal sheds snow more cleanly and resists wind when fastened properly. Colour and panel profile matter for look and expansion. On steep, simple planes metal shines. On busy roofs with many valleys and dormers, asphalt can be cleaner to detail and price.
Look, noise, and neighbourhood fit
Modern architectural shingles match most Ontario streetscapes. Metal reads more contemporary or rural, depending on colour. Neither has to look industrial.
Rain noise under metal is rarely an issue with a solid deck and proper underlayment. We still mention it so there are no surprises.
