Why fall maintenance matters here
Leaves, needles, and leftover summer storms clog drainage right before freeze-up. Small issues that are easy in October become ice and leak problems in January.
You do not need to climb the roof yourself. Much of this checklist can be done from the ground with binoculars, or by booking a short professional visit.
Clear gutters and downspouts
Remove debris so water can leave the roof edge. Confirm downspouts discharge away from the foundation. Standing water at the eaves is a common ice dam starter.
If gutters pull away from the fascia or seams leak, fix them before snow load adds weight.
Scan shingles, flashing, and penetrations
From the yard, look for missing tabs, exposed nails, or lifted flashing at chimneys and walls. Check around plumbing stacks and roof vents for cracked boots.
Photograph anything that looks off. Those photos help us quote a repair quickly if you call.
Peek at the attic on a cold day
After a cold night, look for frost on the underside of the roof deck or damp insulation. That points to ventilation or air-sealing issues worth fixing before deep winter.
